Writing the Other: A Practical Approach by Nisi Shawl and Cynthia Ward is now available from Aqueduct Press for $9 U.S. a copy. Based on the acclaimed “Writing the Other” workshop, this book includes essays and exercises that help authors create believable characters with diverse backgrounds. Race, religion, and age are among the differences covered in the book’s hands-on approach.

Nisi Shawl’s stories have appeared in Asimov’s SF Magazine, Strange Horizons, and the groundbreaking Dark Matter anthology series. A guest lecturer at Stanford University and a frequent contributor to The Seattle Times, she’s the Clarion West Writers Workshop Diversity/Outreach Coordinator and co-founder of the Carl Brandon Society, a group focusing on people of color in speculative and fantastic fiction.

Cynthia Ward is the author of over 30 professionally published short stories She writes the Science Fiction Writers of America Bulletin’s Market Report, and reviews books and movies for several magazines and websites.
